, it is an issue like saving american lives. when you think about how president obama has been asking the public to push legislators call them and e-mail and advocate. leb in denver tomorrow trying to make the point to the local police academy. is there anything the public can do beyond demonstrations to help move this along and get through to our o legislators this is what the american people want? >> it is fundamental grassroots engagement. not only do you have to write them and call them but meet with them in person, show up, tweet at them. this is not a one things you do one day and we've taken care of it now. this is a sustained activity and sustained engagement to take this to the finish line. we've gotten things out of the senate judiciary committee. that is a tribute. we're now at the next hurdle. we'll see how it plays out. if people keep engaging and jumping on this bandwagon that's moving, we're going to make some success. >> john: as a survivor of real and terrible gun violence, how frustrated do you get when you see congress dragging their feet on this or does it inspire you to work

unveiling an nra report that suggests we should fight guns with more guns. it calls for more armed police officers, security guards, and staffers at every u.s. school. the nra also wants to loosen restrictions so teachers can carry weapons. but president obama is on the road pushing a very, very different approach. jim acosta has the latest. >> reporter: john and christine, later today in colorado, president obama will meet with victims and families of victims from the shootings at columbine and aurora. votes in congress on new gun control measures expected later this month, it's now coming down to a battle between president obama and the nra. in a hard push for new gun control laws, president obama is heading to two states still reeling from mass shootings. up first, denver, colorado, near the scene of the movie theater massacre at aurora, and where the president, one white house official says, wants to put the issue back on the front burner. on monday he goes to hartford, connecticut, about an hour from newtown. >> he believes that that passion, that urgency still exists around the coun

a news update from cspan radio. >> president obama has the colorado today. he is traveling to the denver suburb, stepping up his call for universal background checks for gun buyers. he will talk about gun control at the denver police academy live at 5:00 p.m. on cspan radio and television. the connecticut state lawmakers are expected to pass gun control measures today described by some as the most comprehensive in the country. it will include an expansion on the state's assault weapons ban and background checks for all firearms sales. democratic governor daniel malloy has said he will sign the legislation in annapolis, the maryland house of delegates is scheduled to vote on the gun- control measure today. for includes a requirement future handgun buyers to submit fingerprints to the state police to get a license. it limits magazines to 10 bullets. and assault weapons ban is also in the maryland bill. the legislation was proposed by democratic governor martin o'malley after the december shootings in newtown, conn.. for the institute for supply management will release its service sector in
